Tex is what we call him because he looks
like Texas long-horn cow. I first saw him when working on a treestand.
At first, I didn't see brow tines as he popped over the hill. The next
day, one of my hunters saw it and thought it was shooter until he saw no tines.
The next day, another hunter saw him. These were all very close together.
The following day, I saw him cross the road, hurried around and went to a stand
by where he was headed. 1 hour later, here he came! He rubbed a tree
and made a scrape. He finally came diagonally toward me about 25 yards
away. I hit him a little far back so I left him until the next morning.
He went about 1/4 mile. I wanted him out because of the bad genes that
could be passed on. I didn't want more like him. When we cut up the
meat, there was a broadhead in his back straps and in his back bone. It
was an old hit from a year or so ago. If shot in one side, the other side
of antlers don't grow right. So we are guessing that being hit in back
bone that both sides don't grow right. If that is right, his genes were
probably good and he should have been left. The wound was so deep that we
couldn't tell even when he was skinned. Had I known what I know now, I
probably wouldn't have shot him. We all need to work hard to make a good
shot so this doesn't happen. However, everyone that hunts can and does
have it happen every once in a while in their life. My shot was not
perfect but I did get him.
